educational health care plan (ehcp / ehc plan)

What is an EHCP / EHC Plan?

“An education, health and care (EHC) plan is for children and young people aged up to 25 who need more support than is available through special educational needs support.

EHC plans identify educational, health and social needs and set out the additional support to meet those needs.” – gov.uk

options for further study and support

There are several options available, including specialist sixth- form provision, college and other venues offering learning programmes, residential and day- care providers. Some pupils may wish to opt for a supported internship. Traineeships and apprenticeships are also popular options, depending on prior academic attainment. Depending on pupils’ level of ability and prior attainment, many move on to mainstream provision if they are not already taking this route.

There are level 1 and 2 courses available (equivalent to GCSEs) at most of the FE colleges in the Kent and Southeast London areas. Some courses are also offered at entry level (pre-GCSE) and as foundation learning options.

Please visit the institutions’ own websites for more information and entry requirements.

Subject areas may include:

  • Animal care
  • Art and design
  • Beauty, therapy and hairdressing
  • Childcare
  • Construction (bricklaying, painting & decorating and more)
  • Catering and hospitality
  • Game design
  • Information technology (IT)
  • Land- based studies
  • Life skills and foundation learning
  • Mechanics
  • Media studies
  • Sports and leisure
  • Travel and tourism

This list is not exhaustive so please check each institution in your chosen location to see what else is on offer.

If students successfully complete an Entry level 3 course, they may want to apply for a level 1 course after completion. After completing a level 1 course pupils may progress onto level 2, or may decide to go into employment or voluntary work. Pupils studying a level 3 course could move onto further education or university.

funding for further education

Funding for those with an EHCP is often available until a pupil reaches the age of 25. However, this will vary from council to council, and will depend on several factors including the pupil’s progress and current achievement, the programmes they wish to study, the educational offer that is closest to their home (taking into account their aspirations) and the travelling distances. Other factors may also impact on the accessibility of funding.

Your current academy should be able to offer you some support with regards to possible next steps after you have completed your education with them.

For those without an EHCP, funding will be decided and allocated according to each individual’s situation based on their needs and requirements.

For many pupils without an EHCP, but with additional needs or a suspected (but non-diagnosed) learning need or disability, support and provision will vary for each individual, depending on their progress and achievements at school, their future predicted grades on leaving that institution, and what they would like to do in the future, as well as any other specific needs they may have.
